A last second three- pointer from Desmond Lofland helped the #8 Fort Valley State Wildcats take down the top- seeded Tuskegee University Tigers 80-77.
The Wildcats looked dead in the beginning of the game, letting the Tigers get on a 16-0 run in the first six minutes of the game. After a quick timeout by Wildcats head coach Samuel Jackson, Brandon Davey brought the Wildcats back to life after hitting three three-pointers back to back, bringing the Wildcats within seven.
The Wildcats started off different in the second half, keeping Tuskegee down majority of the half. However, the Tigers of Tuskegee were not going down without a fight. With the band playing, cheerleaders cheering and the fans going wild, the Tigers took the lead with five minutes remaining.
With both teams going back and forth, having a total of five lead changes during the last four minutes of the game, both teams were adimate in attempting to keeping their seasons alive.
With 11 seconds left, the game being tied at 77 and Tiger fans screaming “defense!“ Lofland sized up his defender and silenced the crowd, sinking the game winning three.The Wildcats’ top scorer was Davey with 26 points. Lofland was just shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds and Cecil Bent helped out with 12 points.
Joshua Eichelberger recorded a double- double having 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Tigers. Calvin Thomas and Kevin May had contributed a combined 36 points as well.
The Fort Valley Wildcats will face the winner between Benedict/Stillman on Friday March 2 at 8 p.m. at Forbes Arena.
